How Online Casino Bonuses Really Work: What to Check Before You Claim

A welcome bonus feels like free money. It isn't. It's a deal: the casino tops up your account, and you agree to some rules about how that money gets used and what you have to do before any of it is yours to withdraw.
Two minutes of reading is usually all it takes to work out whether an offer is decent or whether it's about to sit on top of your own deposit like a lid.
The wagering requirement is the headline number
It tells you how many times you have to stake the bonus before you can cash out. A 100 EUR bonus at 35x means 3,500 EUR through the games. Thats a lot more than most people picture when they see "100% up to 100 EUR".
Then check what the multiplier applies to. Bonus only? Fine. Bonus plus deposit? You just doubled the work for the same headline. Honestly, a small bonus at 20x beats a huge one at 50x nearly every time.
Not every game counts the same
Slots usually count 100%. Blackjack, roulette, live tables and video poker often count 10% or nothing at all, and some individual titles are excluded outright.
So if youre a table player, a slots-weighted bonus is close to useless to you. Watch the max stake rule too — most operators cap what you can bet per spin while a bonus is running, and going over it can void winnings even if you did everything else right.
Look at the clock
Bonuses expire, usually somewhere between a week and a month. Take the total wagering, divide it by the days youve got, and ask yourself whether thats anything like how you normally play.
If the answer is "I'd have to play way more than usual", that's your cue to skip it. It's an offer, not a dare.
Find the maximum cashout
Free spins and no-deposit offers almost always cap what you can actually withdraw from the winnings, and the cap is often small. Whatever that number is, that's the real size of the promotion — not the spin count in the banner.
Know how the two balances behave
Cash and bonus funds sit in separate buckets. Which one gets spent first, whether you can cancel the bonus halfway through, what happens to pending winnings if you do — it's all in the terms.
This is where people get caught out: requesting a withdrawal can cancel an active bonus and wipe the progress with it.
The two-minute check
Before you claim, find these six things:
The wagering multiplier and what it applies to. Game weighting and any excluded titles. The max stake while wagering. The expiry window. The maximum cashout. How bonus and cash balances interact.
If a promotion page doesn't spell all six out clearly, that tells you something. Play with your own money instead.
